Sometime around AD 449 an invasion of Britain by the Saxons, the Angles and the Jutes began, lasting over one hundred years and, inevitably, bringing with it its own grammar and vocabulary. These tribes are thought of as the ‘founders of the English nation’ (Baugh and Cable, 2002, p. 47), and as such, are also the founders of the English language [from the West Germanic branch of Indo-European].
